The story of Borges begins in 1884, when brothers António and Francisco Borges founded a company engaged in banking and the trade of lottery tickets and tobacco. Their growing interest in wine led to the establishment of Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges in 1891, marking the start of a dedicated winemaking venture. A defining milestone followed in 1904 with the acquisition of Quinta de Solaheira in the Douro Valley, an investment that shaped the company’s long-term identity. The vineyard holdings were later expanded with the addition of 46 hectares at Quinta de Simaens in 1991, followed by a further 74 hectares in the Dão region. Since 1998, Vinhos Borges has formed part of Grupo JMV, Portugal’s largest distribution group.

Located in the northeast of Portugal, the Douro is widely regarded as one of the oldest winegrowing regions in the world. Its dramatic valleys, winding river and striking landscapes earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001. While originally demarcated for the production of Port, the region was authorised in 1982 to produce dry red and white wines under the Douro Denomination of Origin. In the Dão, a region renowned for its refined and velvety wines, Borges farms 340 hectares of vineyards planted predominantly with old vines of native Portuguese grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Gouveio.

With over 115 years of winemaking history, Borges continues to pursue excellence as the benchmark for its distinctly Portuguese wines. Today, the wines are exported to more than fifty countries across five continents, earning a strong international reputation for exceptional quality and value.
