This expressive white from Portugal’s Dão region opens with bright aromas of citrus, orchard fruit and subtle tropical notes. Gentle floral hints and a touch of fresh herbs add lift, while the region’s granite soils lend a delicate mineral edge that brings clarity and finesse to the wine’s aromatic profile.

On the palate it is lively and well-balanced, with refreshing acidity supporting flavours of lemon, white peach and ripe pear. A blend of classic Dão grape varieties such as Bical, Encruzado, Fernão Pires and Malvasia Fina, gives the wine both freshness and texture, leading to a smooth, elegant finish with a lingering mineral note.

It pairs beautifully with seafood and grilled fish, and also works well with salads, roast chicken, creamy cheeses and light Mediterranean dishes.

Dão Meia Encosta White 2024 comes from Portugal’s historic Dão Demarcated Region, known for its granite soils and elegant, mineral-driven wines. Traditional vineyard practices and the region’s cool nights help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity in the grapes.

The wine is made from a classic blend of Bical, Encruzado, Fernão Pires and Malvasia Fina, varieties that bring freshness, structure and delicate aromatics. After harvest the grapes are gently pressed, with only the free-run juice used to ensure purity and finesse.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks (16–17°C). The wine is then aged on fine lees for four months, adding texture and depth before careful stabilisation and bottling to preserve its freshness.

Borges traces its origins to 1884, when brothers António and Francisco Borges founded a business trading in banking, lottery tickets and tobacco. Their passion for wine led to the creation of Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges in 1891, marking the start of a dedicated winemaking venture. A key milestone followed in 1904 with the acquisition of Quinta de Soalheira in the Douro Valley. Vineyard holdings later expanded with Quinta de Simaens in 1991 and further investment in the Dão. Since 1998, Borges has been part of Grupo JMV, strengthening its scale and international reach.

The Douro, one of the world’s oldest demarcated regions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was authorised in 1982 to produce dry wines. In the Dão, Borges farms around 340 hectares of vineyards, focused on native varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Gouveio.

You're Overpaying for French Wine Because You Don't Know About Portugal

Here's what other wine producing countries don't want you to know:

Portugal makes wines just as good, sometimes better, for half the price. Everyone’s been trained to worship the same names: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa, Tuscany. But here’s the uncomfortable truth those wine giants don’t want you to hear:

Portugal is making wines just as exceptional, and often better, for a fraction of the price.

And no, this isn’t a budget alternative. It’s a massive blind spot in the wine world. While the rest of the planet keeps pumping out the same 12 internationally famous grape varieties - Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay - Portugal has been doing something radically different.

They’ve quietly preserved more than 250 indigenous grapes you can’t find anywhere else on Earth.

Not copies. Not variations. Completely unique varieties with flavours, aromas, and textures you’ve literally never tasted before.

That £80 Cabernet you just splurged on? Portugal has wines made from grapes you’ve never even heard of… and they’ll absolutely stun you, for £20–£30.

Imagine discovering flavours that feel familiar and completely new.

Imagine drinking wine that feels like a secret... because hardly anyone else knows about it yet.
