A bold Arinto Curtimenta (skin-contact white) with real personality. Golden-orange in the glass, the nose shows citrus peel, apricot, jasmine and a subtle hint of smoke.

Dry, textured and complex on the palate, with gentle tannins from skin contact balanced by Arinto’s bright acidity. The style will appeal to fans of Friulian skin-contact wines from Italy, often made with grapes like Ribolla Gialla or Friulano.

Pairs beautifully with charcuterie, spicy dishes, rich seafood and aged cheeses.

Hugo Mendes Orange 2023 is produced in the Lisboa region using a traditional skin-contact vinification method. The grapes are harvested and fermented with their skins, allowing extended maceration during fermentation. This technique extracts colour, phenolic compounds and structural elements from the skins, giving the wine its characteristic amber-orange tone and distinctive texture.

Fermentation takes place under carefully controlled conditions, typically in neutral vessels such as stainless steel, allowing the wine to develop naturally while preserving the varietal identity of the grapes. During maceration, the skins remain in contact with the fermenting must, gradually releasing tannins and aromatic compounds that contribute to the wine’s structure and complexity.

After fermentation, the wine remains on its lees for a period of maturation, allowing the components to stabilise and integrate while maintaining freshness and balance. This approach highlights the style of modern Portuguese “curtimenta” wines, where controlled skin contact enhances structure and depth while preserving the character of the coastal Lisboa terroir.

Hugo Mendes’ journey into wine was anything but ordinary. After earning a degree in Biotechnological Engineering in 2005, he discovered his true calling in the vineyards. That same year he joined Quinta da Murta in Bucelas, where his talent quickly shone, rising from cellar hand to Head Winemaker by 2010. Along the way, he earned the nickname “The Wizard Apprentice” through his popular blog, where he demystified the art of winemaking for a new generation of enthusiasts.

By 2016, Hugo’s restless curiosity pushed him to break new ground. He launched Portugal’s first crowdfunding campaign for wine, inviting “patrons” to pre-purchase bottles at special prices. A bold idea that not only funded his independent projects but also challenged the traditional belief that winemaking demanded heavy upfront investment.

In 2019, he left Quinta da Murta to dedicate himself fully to his own label. Today, Hugo brings overlooked Portuguese grapes into the spotlight, crafting expressive wines from Lisboa varieties like Fernão Pires, Vital, and Arinto.

You're Overpaying for French Wine Because You Don't Know About Portugal

Here's what other wine producing countries don't want you to know:

Portugal makes wines just as good, sometimes better, for half the price. Everyone’s been trained to worship the same names: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa, Tuscany. But here’s the uncomfortable truth those wine giants don’t want you to hear:

Portugal is making wines just as exceptional, and often better, for a fraction of the price.

And no, this isn’t a budget alternative. It’s a massive blind spot in the wine world. While the rest of the planet keeps pumping out the same 12 internationally famous grape varieties - Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay - Portugal has been doing something radically different.

They’ve quietly preserved more than 250 indigenous grapes you can’t find anywhere else on Earth.

Not copies. Not variations. Completely unique varieties with flavours, aromas, and textures you’ve literally never tasted before.

That £80 Cabernet you just splurged on? Portugal has wines made from grapes you’ve never even heard of… and they’ll absolutely stun you, for £20–£30.

Imagine discovering flavours that feel familiar and completely new.

Imagine drinking wine that feels like a secret... because hardly anyone else knows about it yet.
