Baga is Bairrada's great red grape, known for firm tannins, high acidity and a long life in the cellar. It also makes superb sparkling wine and fresh rosé. About Baga

Baga is the signature red grape of Bairrada, on Portugal's Atlantic coast. It has thick skins, tight bunches and a reputation for being difficult. Picked too early it is harsh, but in the right hands it makes some of the most distinctive reds in the country.

What Baga tastes like

Expect wild red and black berries, a savoury, earthy note and a firm grip of tannin, with high acidity that keeps the wine fresh. With age it develops notes of leather, tobacco and forest floor.

Where it grows

Baga belongs to Bairrada, where limestone and clay soils and the cool Atlantic influence suit it. It is also grown in the neighbouring Beira region and, in smaller amounts, around Setúbal.

How winemakers use it

Bairrada producers bottle Baga alone, blend it with grapes like Touriga Nacional or Jaen, and use it for fine traditional method sparkling wine and rosé. Its acidity is a gift for bubbles, and its structure suits long ageing.

Our Baga wines

Our range runs from Bairrada reds, including old vines and organic bottles, to rosés, and from Mateus Rosé to Luis Pato's sparkling Baga. A Dão red blends it with Jaen, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional. Serve the reds with roast pork, suckling pig, stews and cured meats, and the sparkling wines with fried food and shellfish.

Where do you ship to in the UK?

We deliver to mainland England, Wales and most of Scotland, including Aberdeen and Inverness.

We are not currently able to deliver to Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the Isles of Scilly, or the far north and island areas of Scotland.

Delivery charges depend on your postcode and the number of bottles. Please refer to our Shipping Policy for full details.

All orders are sent to the address provided at checkout, so please double-check your shipping details to avoid delays.

Your billing address can be outside the UK, as long as the delivery address is one we can reach in the UK. For European deliveries, please contact us and one of our EU associates will be happy to assist.

Order Quantities and Size Limits?

There is no minimum order value. You are welcome to order as little or as much as you like.

Because of courier weight limits and the safe transport of glass bottles, the maximum is 24 bottles per order, wherever we deliver.

If you would like more than 24 bottles, you may place multiple separate orders or contact us for a customised delivery quotation.

How long is delivery?

Delivery Times

Most postcodes receive their wine in 1 to 2 working days. Orders placed before 12pm for mainland England and Wales are usually delivered the next working day.

Delivery to remote parts of mainland Scotland takes 2 to 3 working days, but it can take up to 5 days.

All deliveries are made via APC Overnight. Delivery times are estimates and may occasionally vary due to weather conditions, peak periods or courier delays.

Not sure about your postcode? Please check our Shipping Policy for the full delivery areas, charges and times.

Can I track my order?

Yes. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email confirming shipment along with your tracking number so you can follow your delivery online. If you provide a mobile number at checkout, you may also receive SMS updates from the courier.

On the day of delivery, APC will send a notification confirming your parcel is out for delivery. Please note that this message confirms the parcel has left the depot and is scheduled for delivery that day. It does not necessarily mean the driver is heading to you immediately. Please refer to the estimated delivery window provided.

After receiving your delivery notification, you can manage your delivery directly with the courier. This may include:
- Leaving delivery instructions
- Requesting delivery to a neighbour
- Rearranging the delivery date

Please note that instructions such as leaving the parcel outside the front door or in a safe place are not permitted. As we sell alcohol, all deliveries are age restricted and must be received in person.

If delivery is unsuccessful, the courier will normally attempt delivery twice before the parcel is returned to us.

What if there’s no one at home?

Please note that deliveries are made throughout the day. We recommend choosing a delivery address where someone is likely to be available to receive the order.

You will receive advance notification from the courier confirming your delivery date, followed by a delivery window on the day itself. This allows you to plan accordingly or rearrange the delivery if needed.

If you are not usually at home during the day, you may wish to use an alternative address, such as your workplace, a family member’s home or a trusted neighbour.

What payment methods can I use?

You can pay for your order using whichever method is most convenient for you. We accept credit and debit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay and Shop Pay.

If you would prefer to pay by bank transfer, just get in touch and we will be happy to provide the details.

Do you accept returns?

Refunds

We offer a 30 day return policy. You must request a return within 15 days of receiving your order. Once your return is approved, you will have a further 15 days to send the item back. Customers are responsible for return shipping costs unless the item is faulty or incorrect.

We will notify you once we have received and inspected your return. If approved, your refund will be processed to your original payment method within 10 business days.

Please note that it may take additional time for your bank or card provider to process the refund.

If more than 15 business days have passed since your refund was approved, please contact us at info@portugalbestwines.co.uk

To be eligible for a return, the item must be in the same condition in which you received it, unused and in its original packaging. You will also need the receipt or proof of purchase.
