About this Wine

About this Wine

It is a real Dão wine to accompany your daily meals. A white full of elegance, at an extremely affordable price, which is proof that a good wine is accessible to everyone. A traditional wine, for unforgettable moments.

SOILS:
The soils of granitic origin (porphyritic granites) are well-drained but have very low fertility and water retention, which leads to the natural control of plant vigor and results in moderate water stress during the ripening period, allowing the grapes to express their full potential.

YEAR:
The 2022/2023 wine-growing season was characterized by an abnormally dry autumn/winter, causing the vines to start their biological cycle with very low water reserves in the soil. The summer, very dry and with episodes of extreme heat, required irrigation to maintain moderate water stress levels. However, after the veraison, the cool and characteristic nights of the Dão led to excellent grape ripening, which expressed its full potential at harvest to produce this exceptional white wine.

VINIFICATION:
The grapes were harvested during the cool hours of dawn into small 25 kg boxes, following a careful selection of the best grapes in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures over 20 days in small stainless steel tanks.

Type: White Wine
Region: Dão
Grape Blend: Encruzado, Malvasia Fina
Pairing: Salads, Fish, Seafood
Contains sulphites Yes

About this Winery

The Santar Vila Jardim Wines project stems from the Santar Vila Jardim project – www.santarvilajardim.pt – which brought together several gardens in the Historic Village of Santar, breaking walls, creating bridges, connecting spaces, allowing you to visit a Historic Village and its cultural heritage through these green corridors.

The owners of these gardens also wanted to take advantage of some existing vineyards, creating new vineyards in these exceptional spaces, where once there were vegetable gardens and orchards, that take advantage of the positive impact of biodiversity, dry stone walls, native vegetation and hedges, some centenary, that preserve the habitat and the species that are in them, improving the production of grapes and wine.

Thus, a new vineyard and wine project is born from the best plots of these properties, in a balanced and natural environment, favouring the quality dimension as its inseparable partner.

The union of these various families and their properties in the village of Santar, Casa dos Condes de Santar e Magalhães, Casa dos Linhares Ibérico Nogueira, Hotel Valverde Santar Vila Jardim, Nossa Senhora da Piedade and Casa da Magnólia, brought several beneficial valences to the project, The Casa dos Condes de Santar e Magalhães added to this component the long experience in the wine tradition in the region and in the country, this family legacy being brought by Pedro de Vasconcellos e Souza, the “Pater” winemaker of this project.

His substantive career, not only in the creation of Casa de Santar wines but also of Herdade do Freixo in the Alentejo, are inseparable marks of a personality that manages to understand the spirit of the place and make us savour its authenticity. His passion for this region, which he considers to be his birthplace, has given him yet another challenge that is the crowning achievement of a life dedicated to wine excellence.

The study of the land, the grape varieties, the clones, the attentive listening to the wisdom of the ancients, combined with technological innovation, are parameters that have been thoroughly taken into account.

The inclusive nature of the project, its dialoguing dimension and plurality of skills, was another important angle in this achievement that we are honoured to present to you. Enjoy these nectars.
