About this Wine

About this Wine

Planalto is today one of the greatest references of white wine in the Douro Demarcated Region, the result of in-depth studies carried out over the years, the careful choice of its grape varieties and the use of the best winemaking technology in its production.
On arrival at the Sogrape Vinhos winery in Vila Real, the grapes harvested by hand in the highlands and plateaus of the Douro region were destemmed and gently crushed. This was followed by a process of cold decantation of the musts, which, after reaching the necessary clarity, were fermented in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature between 16ºC-18ºC for about 20 days. Maturation for 6 months in stainless steel vats.

Type: White Wine
Region: Douro
Grape Variety: Viosinho, Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Arinto, Moscatel

You're Overpaying for French Wine Because You Don't Know About Portugal

Here's what other wine producing countries don't want you to know: Portugal makes wines just as good, sometimes better, for half the price. Everyone’s been trained to worship the same names: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa, Tuscany. But here’s the uncomfortable truth those wine giants don’t want you to hear:

  • List Icon Portugal is making wines just as exceptional, and often better, for a fraction of the price.

And no, this isn’t a budget alternative. It’s a massive blind spot in the wine world. While the rest of the planet keeps pumping out the same 12 internationally famous grape varieties - Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay - Portugal has been doing something radically different.

  • List Icon They’ve quietly preserved more than 250 indigenous grapes you can’t find anywhere else on Earth.

Not copies. Not variations. Completely unique varieties with flavours, aromas, and textures you’ve literally never tasted before.
That £80 Cabernet you just splurged on? Portugal has wines made from grapes you’ve never even heard of… and they’ll absolutely stun you, for £20–£30.

  • List Icon Imagine discovering flavours that feel familiar and completely new.

Imagine drinking wine that feels like a secret... because hardly anyone else knows about it yet.

About this Winery

Sogrape Vinhos was born of the will and courage of a group of friends. In the difficult economic and political environment of 1942, they decided to stake everything on the visionary talents of one man. This man had the vision to create and develop an innovative wine company with a difference, one which could make and promote Portuguese wines on a global scale.

This vision belonged to Fernando van Zeller Guedes, whose character and forceful personality paved the way for a successful venture that many believed was doomed to fail from the outset. The unparalleled foresight and vision of Sogrape’s founder, resulted in the creation of the first global Portuguese wine brand – Mateus Rosé. Sold in over 120 countries, this proved to be such a resounding commercial success that it provided the decisive momentum for the growth as well as affirming the leadership of which the Company is so proud. The willingness to innovate and the ambition to do things differently – along with respect for tradition and the values of ethics and responsibility – marked the birth of an organization that has proved capable of preserving its founder’s vision and adapting to inevitably changing times. Today, led by the third generation of the founding family, Sogrape Vinhos is ever more closely dedicated to meeting the founding objective: to bring the world quality Portuguese wine brands, with sufficient volume to satisfy the needs of different market segments.

From the pioneering days of buying barrels of wine from small producers in the Douro for processing and bottling in a rented cellar in Vila Real, Sogrape Vinhos has steadily grown. Continuous investment has expanded and developed the company’s assets and workforce to such a degree that Sogrape Vinhos owns over 830 hectares of vineyards in all the key Portuguese wine regions. Nowadays, the full scope of Sogrape Vinhos is clearly demonstrated by the breadth and weight of its portfolio. At first glance, what immediately stands out is the presence of two major global Portuguese wine brands – Mateus Rosé and Sandeman as well as the prestigious wines of Porto Ferreira and Offley. Added to which are the renowned specialist brands that represent the major Portugese wine regions. Beginning with the most famous Portuguese wine of all, Barca Velha, the pride of Casa Ferreirinha (Douro) and continuing with the elegant wines of Quinta dos Carvalhais (Dão), the vibrant Herdade do Peso (Alentejo), the fresh Vinhos Verdes of Quinta de Azevedo and Gazela, and the multi-regional Grão Vasco, to name but a few.

To tell the story of Sogrape Vinhos it is essential to retrace the origins and evolution of the plan conceived by this visionary man. And then to appreciate how his successors have inherited his values and pursued them with dedication, vigour and expertise to grow and develop Portugal’s leading wine company. Above all, the achievements of such a large team are promoted with pride and sustained by the ambition to innovate and enhance all that Sogrape Vinhos has to offer.

Exceptional wine. Reminds me of the wine I enjoyed at the party night at the end of a summer cruise on the Douro 🎉. It has a delicous scent and taste and I shall order it again!

Excellent wine

I have been drinking this wine since around 1974, on a business trip to Matosinhos. Medium dry and fruity, with a very pleasant nose. Superbly drinkable, as an aperitif or to accompany fish/shellfish. My first experience was with locally caught clams. None of the harsh dryness of some of the dryer white wines.

Refreshing and. fruity

A delighfull fragrant. white, ideal for a warm spring evening. Delivery was swift (next day), bottle arrived encased in a well protected package. Well done!

Excellent wine

I just happened to buy this wine and tried it to see how it was good. All I can say is that it presents a lovely translucent ruby color, characteristic of the grape, with a delicate, almost ethereal shimmer in the glass. It’s brighter at the rim, hinting at its lighter body and aromatic nature and of course, it taste delicious.

Fresh, light and super refreshing

Light, crisp, and just a little fizzy. Perfect for summer barbecues or with seafood. Easy to drink and always a crowd-pleaser!

Rich, smooth and great with food

Lovely smooth red with notes of plum and a hint of spice. Tastes way more expensive than it is! Perfect with grilled meats or cheese. Fast deliver as well.

My favourite new white wine discovery!

I've had some great red wines from the Alentejo region in the past, but this white has opened my eyes to some really great white wines from this beautiful part of Portugal.

Lovely wine, reminds me of holidays in Portugal!

This is my go to Vinho Verde. It's light and refreshing and is a really pleasant wine to drink. Portuguese Vinho Verdes are unique among white wines I've tried in having that lovely crisp, dry quality that I so love.

Very enjoyable!

A very enjoyable wine, delivered quickly and efficiently.

Wine was great and the shipping was super fast! Highly recommended

I lectured in Portugal during the ‘70’s, ‘80’s and ‘90’s.
‘ The Vinho verdhe from Moncao was an absolute favourite which I enjoyed greatly in the Fado houses of Alfama . The Muralhas is not only a nostalgic reminder of good friends but a reminder of the guality and extreme drinkability of one of the great historic wines of Portugal.

Delicious wine, delivered fast!

A safe and quick delivery. The wine is delicious, perfect as a light drink at lunch or with cheese or fish. Really enjoyed it! Will buy more.

Fab wine, prompt service!

Very impressed with the quality of my order, both the content inside the bottles and the delivery. Will be ordering again for sure.
